Presentation: Place for an Astronomer

The goal of this project was a place for an astronomer to do research, read, paint, or just contemplate the universe.

. Concept Sketches

The main concept [a place to observe the heavens, atop a hill, and the working area by the lake at its base] developed fairly quickly; it can be seen going down the right side of the page.

The form at the hilltop symbolizes a radio telescope.

.

. Plan of Working Area

The two wings (for writing and for looking at paintings) are joined by a library. A skylight runs the length of each wing, with a stylized geometric design over the library.

The building is entered, from below, by the library. Each wing has a small patio at its end to observe the skies.

  1. View of top from above "spine"
  2. Site countour map (interval 1m)
.

. The Focal Point

This stylized rendering emphasizes the hilltop observation area's "radio telescope" form, probing the heavens.
